Adrian Shaughnessy Poster

Adrian Shaughnessy Poster.

The brief was to create a poster for the Adrian Shaughnessy Lecture at SIAD (Sheffield Institute of Art and Design).

The Solution was to include an opinion of the designer himself within the poster. Using influence from his previous book entitled ‘How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul’. This poster represents the letterforms as the designer and the counters (the holes in the middle of letters) as the soul within. The letterforms without counters are then questioning whether they are designers if they have no soul.

Lab 4 Living

lab4living Lab 4 Living

Lab 4 Living.

Lab 4 Living is an experimental research sector of Sheffield Hallam University, their focus is on how design can aid human experience.

The client required a re-design of their current logo. The approach was simple; aim to get as much of the essence of the company through the brand identity. This resulted in the above proposal for a widget like motif. These two jigsaw pieces represent the client and the company (in purple) being the missing piece. The coming together of these two make for a completed whole. This ident was made to work on a variety of media from print to screen and video, shown below as a multimedia intro for presentations and promotional videos.

Paul Rand Poster

Paul Rand Poster.

This poster was designed as part of a collaboration between two other colleagues and myself. Each of us from a different specialism within graphic design. Myself with a keen eye for typographic detail and conceptual design and layout, Amandine Balestra-Pickett an illustrator and Robert Holt a graphic designer with a focus leaning to marketing. The brief for this poster was set by dutch graphic designer Jan Van Toorn and Simon Davies as part of a workshop at Sheffield Hallam University. Both versions of the poster are displayed above (detail of which is within the brief).

The Brief
Critical practice workshop
17–18 March 2009

Each group of 3 students will design two versions of one poster. The first will be presented on Tuesday morning at the beginning of the workshop and the second on Wednesday morning. The second poster can only be designed after the first presentation. Both posters will be A0 (portrait), the first as a print or original artwork and the second as a projection at scale onto a blank A0 (portrait).

The poster should comment on the work of a post-war graphic designer. Not just a registration but a visual statement about the designers mentality and its visual expression. We would like to invite the students to show us what they find important, good or bad, and to gain an understanding of the designer, the work and its context.

Pear Computer Rebrand.

The client asked for a rebrand after a change in ownership of the business. Key aspects were to improve recognizability, and clarify what pear computers actually did as a business. The decision was made to improve clarity to the customer, reposition the company as a service and most importantly improve awareness of the company.

Repeat

Repeat…Repeat…Repeat

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” George Santayana.

This is another quote project, this time experimenting with etching. The process is simple, etch into a aluminum plate, ink up and put through a roll press. Simple but definitely effect and marvelous. The sheer detail and very low reproduction value is amazing. Obviously the plate can be used thousands of times and will print exactly the same, if using only one colour. The experiment here was to try varied amounts of colour and more than one pressing. The outcomes are vibrant and have depth and substance which adds meaning to the quote. This one out of all has drove most of my project work this semester remember the past and improve upon it.
