This poster was designed as part of a collaboration between two other colleagues and myself. Each of us from a different specialism within graphic design. Myself with a keen eye for typographic detail and conceptual design and layout, Amandine Balestra-Pickett an illustrator and Robert Holt a graphic designer with a focus leaning to marketing. The brief for this poster was set by dutch graphic designer Jan Van Toorn and Simon Davies as part of a workshop at Sheffield Hallam University. Both versions of the poster are displayed above (detail of which is within the brief).
The Brief
Critical practice workshop
17–18 March 2009
Each group of 3 students will design two versions of one poster. The first will be presented on Tuesday morning at the beginning of the workshop and the second on Wednesday morning. The second poster can only be designed after the first presentation. Both posters will be A0 (portrait), the first as a print or original artwork and the second as a projection at scale onto a blank A0 (portrait).
The poster should comment on the work of a post-war graphic designer. Not just a registration but a visual statement about the designers mentality and its visual expression. We would like to invite the students to show us what they find important, good or bad, and to gain an understanding of the designer, the work and its context.
