On The Road – Jack Kerouac (Penguin Design Awards 2007).

On the road is a novel about a man travelling across America living a life full of jazz, drink, drugs and sex, it is about personal and physical exploration of oneself. I chose to represent the feel of the book through the layout by using my own grid style; the scribble grid. In the book he is continuously travelling back and forth across America, I represented this through the grid with a continous line which folds back in on itself, the type for the title of the book then comes straight from the grid. Hand drawn like a map and in biro, things a person on the travel are only likley to carry around with them. I feel this actively portrays the content of the book.
