The brief was to make a manifesto for perfectionism. The idea was that it should be a perfectionist’s manifesto i.e. it should show the struggle to get every detail in the manifesto perfected. The manifesto itself is a 10m x 210mm paper roll, it was designed to fit into an old non digital typewriter, as i have little experience with touch typing this allowed for mistakes to occur, the challege was to write 10 values or what would become known as later as the 10 laws of perfection; perfectly. If the print was bad or spelling errors occurred then it had to be wrote again. This was then filmed and the manifesto is the 2hr long video projecting the feelings of stress and desire for completion.
THE PERFECTIONIST MANIFESTO:
The Make Perfect group is a group of perfectionists that abide by strict laws as set out in the guide to perfection. To become a member you are initiated by another member using the initiation kit at the initiation ceremony. The values the group abide by are the 10 laws taken from the perfectionist manifesto, although only 9 are in the manual, the tenth hidden law is to keep control within the group and is printed with red ink on the armbands so if they break the bond of perfection they see the 10th law as failure. The design is made to look as if it has been around for a long time from the era of ww2 in colour and type. The guides are designed to look similar to ration books and overall design made to be strong and overpowering to the viewer.Â
MAKE PERFECT INITATION:
To become a member of Make Perfect you must be initiated by another member at an initiation ceremony. This was done inside a dark booth with red lighting. The initiation process is there to make the group look as imposing as it can and make the new member feel very uncomfortable. All personality is stripped during the initiation and free will is seen as failure. The perfectionism pieces are visually iconic and strong, bold and highly conceptual, expressing imposing and unnerving feelings. It is intended to be a microcosm of political change with dictatorship and extremist right-wing policies.
